One of my most favorite things to take photos of is babies. Their soft honey dew skin and those chubby cheeks, how could any photographer not love to capture this new life? While I love photographing these beautiful creatures, what I love the most is being able to capture a precious moment between mother and their new child.
I’ve come to find though is that mothers after giving birth only a few days, a week ago or months ago are not too keen on getting photographed. I completely understand. We still have our postpartum bodies and well, the lack of sleep is certainly not helping. But photos with your child are one that you will really wish you had in the future. They may even be the ones you may cherish the most.
Some other advice I love to give my new moms to help them feel their best is to use makeup that is natural. This is the best look for those close shots when their faces are up against their baby.
There are some things to consider when taking a photograph with your little one to make sure that you are getting the best photo you can. Photos with baby close to the face show more of a connection that comes across in the photograph. Pose your baby where you are holding them close to your face. Another great tip is to tuck your baby’s legs in when holding them. This will look less awkward and more like your baby is more a cute little bundle.
And as always with photography, lighting is everything. I always make sure that my subjects are positioned at a 45 degree angle. This will help ensure I can capture the soft shadows and the brightest color in one’s eyes.I also always ask my clients to snuggle close to their baby. This provides more of that warmth photographs between mother and baby that I am looking for. These candid loving moments are the best to capture and many of my clients find the most connection with.
The thing is that as a mom, it’s a funny how we never seem to be in the picture. We are always the ones behind the camera, trying to capture every birthday and milestone we can. So if there is an opportunity where someone else is behind the camera lens taking photos of your little one, Mommy, please get in the photo.
